The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP): Adelante! increases diversity in the STEM workforce through transformative undergraduate STEM education.
What is LSAMP?
The LSAMP initiative supports historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in STEM. This program is limited to a select and highly committed group of scholars with a declared major in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the pre-health professions.
Application
Deadline: Open until all seats filled
Once eligible students are accepted to UIW and commit to attending, they will receive an invitation to apply. To be eligible, students must:
Special one-credit course during the first semester of studies
Six summer research positions available following scholars’ first year
Financial Opportunities
$750 per semester stipend during the first two years of study
During LSAMP summer research, free room and board as well as a $3,500 stipend (for applicable students only)
Fast Facts and Outcomes
All scholars receive a stipend during their first two years
Six scholars will have the opportunity to complete summer research after their first year
Scholars will build community and networks through special programs and mentorship opportunities at UIW and across San Antonio
Peer Mentors
Each LSAMP scholar will have a personal peer mentor, who will serve as:
An experienced guide and role model to help you navigate easily through your college experience
A trusted ally who provides advice, support, and information with your personal, academic, and social situations
LSAMP was named in honor of former congressman, Louis Stokes (February 23, 1925 – August 18, 2015), who spent his life serving and defending those in need. He was an attorney who specialized in civil rights cases, and was the first black congressman elected in the state of Ohio. He served 15 terms in the United States House of Representatives, representing the east side of Cleveland.
